A record-breaking year for Smith Partnership in the Legal 500

The release of The Legal 500 2025 edition saw a total of 12 of the firm’s practice areas recognised  - whilst also retaining our status as a ‘Leading Firm’ and ‘Top Tier’.

The Legal 500 is an independent publication that assesses the strengths of law firms in over 150 jurisdictions, the results of which are released each Autumn. Law firms are assessed and ranked based on a variety of factors, including client satisfaction, strong technical ability, having a reputation for handling complex matters and having a clear investment for the future in a particular practice area.

Our practice areas that once again ranked in the 2025 edition are:

  • Corporate and commercial
  • General crime and fraud
  • Commercial litigation
  • Debt recovery
  • Employment
  • Insolvency and corporate recovery
  • Personal injury and clinical negligence
  • Professional negligence
  • Contentious trusts and probate
  • Family
  • Commercial property
  • Property litigation

Contentious Trust and Probate

Our Contentious Trust and Probate department’s ranking has increased from ‘Tier 3’ in 2024 to ‘Tier 2’ in 2025. This increase is a testament to the level of work and client care that the team applies to all matters.

Our clients have described the firm as giving ‘practical and efficient advice’ with a highly-skilled team of professionals to support clients every step of the way.

Victoria Townsend, Senior Associate, who heads up the Contentious Trusts & Probate team, spoke proudly about this achievement.

She said “We are really pleased to have been promoted within The Legal 500 rankings.

“This is particularly welcome as it would not be possible without the positive feedback and recommendations from our client referees. As Contentious Probate is a very specialist area, it is great for the team to be recognised in this way.”

Victoria has been described as ‘an experienced and knowledgeable lawyer in the contentious trusts and probate field’ which, together with her team, generates expectational results.

Alison Neate, Partner and Head of Professional Liability, specialises in Contentious Trust work. She spoke about the positive impact that this recognition represents for clients “Our Legal 500 ‘Tier 2’ ranking offers assurance about our level of expertise in this niche, often complex and emotive, area of law.  This consolidates our clients’ confidence that they are in the safest of hands.”

Clinical Negligence

Our Clinical Negligence department headed up by Partner, Anna McLeod, who was named 'Next Generation Partner’, retained its status as a 'Tier 2’ department, after increasing from 'Tier 3’ last year.

Anna comments on this success “I am delighted that the Team have retained our Tier 2 status and that our high levels of client-focused service have been recognised by the Legal 500.  Our clients are often in a vulnerable position when they instruct us and our aim is to guide them through the claim process in an approachable and sensitive way. It is gratifying to see that our success is reflected in our Legal 500 ranking”

The department was described by The Legal 500 as having key strengths in 'first-rate client care, tailored case handling and meticulous case preparation.'. Our clients also commented that they 'felt looked after and safe in their hands throughout' and that the team were 'experienced and professional throughout.'

Crime and Family

We are incredibly proud that, once again, our Crime and Family departments have retained their long standing ‘Tier 1’ practice status.

The Legal 500 described the Crime team as being a ‘close knit team who value their clients and work hard to support them’. Partner and Head of the Crime, Andrew Oldroyd, was described as having an ‘incredible level of knowledge and expertise’ and is ‘committed to providing an outstanding service to clients.’

He comments on the success “We often see clients when they are experiencing unprecedented levels of stress. It is our job to support them through such difficult times. Not only is our ‘Tier 1’ status a huge honour for the department, it also reassures our clients that the highest standards are being applied to their individual cases.”
