Reflecting on our Double Victory at the DDLS Awards

Smith Partnership celebrated a double victory at the Derby District Law Society Awards on the 21st of March 2025. Our Julie Tomasik, was recognised with the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award, alongside Danielle Upton, who took the title of ‘Commercial Lawyer of the Year’.

They were both up against some fantastic competitors who have all made significant contributions in their fields, so we are incredibly proud of their achievement.

Starting her legal career 49 years ago, as a Trainee Legal Executive, Julie has risen to becoming one of the region's most respected legal minds, earning herself a reputation for her high levels of client care.

Over the course of her career, Julie has given back to the legal community by supporting countless conferences, seminars and workshops and by supporting aspiring young lawyers. Julie was also a specialist advisor to The Institute of Legal Executives for several years. Many of her former protégés now occupy positions of prominence throughout the Midlands.

Julie talks about her career, “Since entering the Conveyancing industry in 1976, there have been significant changes including the ongoing compulsory registration of all land by Land Registry phasing out of dictation and the manual typewriter and continuing digital enhancements to the process, but the one thing that hasn't changed is my love for the specialism!”

"I am honoured to be recognised with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ by my peers, for my work over the years - it truly means the world to me. This award symbolises all of my clients who have brought their first home together or who are now living in their dream house. Helping people through these momentous occasions was the reason I decided to specialise in conveyancing in the first place, and I am grateful to be able to continue helping them."

Danielle joined the firm 10 years ago as a Trainee Solicitor and has since worked her way up,  becoming a Partner in our Commercial Property team in 2023. In this time, she has demonstrated unmatched levels of dedication and resilience and has grown a portfolio of long-standing, high-profile clients within Derby.

She has also created a name for herself within the local community through her presence at networking events and her commitment to charity work, including being on the board of trustees at the YMCA Derbyshire and the Consolidated Charity of Burton upon Trent.

As well as this, Danielle is a central part of the firm’s apprenticeship program. She has established strong links with local Universities and is a mentor for two of our apprentices.

She comments on her success, “I am incredibly honoured and humbled to have received this award in what was a very competitive category.”

“I am thankful for the professional network I have built over the last ten years working in Derby and to the clients that continue to place their trust in me. I would not be where I am today without the support of Smith Partnership, and I am so grateful for them always supporting and championing me.”

This is the second year running that Smith Partnership has walked away from the Derby District Law Society Awards victorious, with Russell Davies winning the ‘Commercial Lawyer of the Year’ award and Amelia Sutcliffe being named 'Trainee Lawyer of the Year' in 2024.
