Companies House ID Verification – What Is Changing?
Since 18 November 2025 it is now a legal requirement for certain individuals to verify their identity with Companies House with the aim of preventing economic crime and abuse of UK corporate structures.
Who will need to verify their ID?
Compulsory identity verification is now required for all new and existing:
- company directors;
- people with significant control (PSCs);
- relevant officers of registerable relevant legal entities (RLEs);
- LLP members;
- those filing documents with Companies House on behalf of others; and
- individuals who are authorised corporate service providers (ACSPs).
The individual completing the ID verification will be provided with a unique personal code by Companies House as evidence that their identity has been verified.
Whilst the ID verification is currently mandatory, there will be a 12-month transition period (ending in November 2026) to provide companies with time to comply with the new requirements.
The table below sets out trigger events for when an individual needs to complete their ID verification:
| Individual | Trigger Event |
|---|---|
| New directors | When incorporating a new company or being appointed as a director to an existing company. |
| New PSCs | When incorporating a new company or being appointed as a PSC of an existing company, the individual will have 14 days from the date of receiving written notice from Companies House requiring them to verify their identity. |
| Existing directors | When a company files its first confirmation statement after 18 November 2025 the existing directors of the company will need to provide their personal ID code to Companies House. The company will be unable to file their confirmation statement without personal ID codes for all the directors. Any individual who holds multiple directorships is required to provide their personal ID code while filing a confirmation statement for each company. |
| Existing PSCs who are directors of the same company | The PSC must provide their personal ID code to Companies House no later than the day succeeding the last day of the company's confirmation statement review period. |
| Existing PSCs who are not directors of the same company | The PSC must file their personal ID code at Companies House within the first 14 days of their birth month. |
Consequences of failing to comply with Companies House ID verification
Directors
- If a person fails to verify their identity and continues to act as a director, they are committing a criminal offence which is punishable by a fine.
- If a company fails to ensure that any individual who continues to act as a director has verified their identity, the criminal offence is committed by both the company and every officer of the company who is in default, such offence is punishable by a fine.
PSCs/RLE
- If a registrable PSC or RLE fails to comply with the ID verification requirements without reasonable excuse, a criminal offence is committed which is punishable by a fine.
- If the offence is committed by an RLE, every officer of the RLE also commits the offence.
How to verify your identity
- Companies House Service – This service uses the 'Gov.UK One' login. You will be asked several security questions and then asked to provide photo ID which will be verified using the GOV.UK One app.
- Using an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – An ACSP is a professional firm, such as a law firm or an accountant who is registered with Companies House to verify identities and is registered with a UK Anti-Money Laundering supervisory body. You will need to provide the ACSP with your ID documents from an approved list of ID evidence. The ACSP will likely charge a fee for this service.
- Post Office – Before visiting a Post Office you will first need to enter the details from your Photo using the 'Verify your identity for Companies House' service. You will then receive a confirmation email with a link to download a customer letter. Once received, you then need to take your letter to your chosen Post Office, with your original ID.
