What is care home neglect?

Moving a loved one into a care home is a big decision and can often be worrisome for families. You put your trust in the home to look after them, and in turn you expect dignity, safety and good medical care. Unfortunately care homes can and do fall short of these expectations, and negligence occurs resulting in avoidable harm to the residents.

What is considered neglect in a care home?

Neglect can be intentional, accidental or the result of systemic changes. Common examples include:

  • Falls due to lack of supervision or unsafe environments
  • Unsafe moving and handling
  • Untreated pressure sores.
  • Failure to correctly administer medication
  • Delays in seeking medical attention from a doctor or ambulance
  • Poor personal care leading to illness.

If your loved one has experienced any of these incidents, you may have grounds to claim.

Who can bring a claim?

You can bring a claim on behalf of your loved one if they either lack capacity or have since passed away due to neglect.
