Alexandra Bullmore comments on the reduction in redundancy figures after furlough extension...

Furlough extended

The furlough scheme has now been extended until the end of April 2021. Rishi Sunak has said that the extension will offer “certainty for millions of jobs and businesses”, and the figures seem to support this statement with 36,700 redundancies being proposed last month which is down from the peak numbers in June of 156,000. (This data is from a BBC Freedom of Information request).

The eligibility criteria remains the same for the furlough scheme. Employers are only required to pay wages, national insurance and pension contributions for hours worked, and cover national insurance and pension contributions for hours not worked.
