Ending quarter one on a high with 5 key promotions
We’re delighted to announce five promotions that took effect on 1 April 2026. Two Senior Associates are stepping up to Partner, and three Partners are advancing to Equity Partner.
James Johnson, Managing Partner, said: “These appointments demonstrate the firm's commitment to growing our own talent, and reflect everything we stand for- investing in people, nurturing our teams, and creating an environment where careers can truly flourish. Congratulations to all five, we are very proud of what they have achieved so far and look forward to seeing how they continue to grow in the future.”
Victoria Townsend has been promoted to Partner in our Contentious Trusts and Probate team, based in Derby. Victoria joined Smith Partnership in 2019, having qualified in 2016, and has spent the last seven years building a reputation that extends well beyond the firm.
She is an accredited member of the Association of Contentious Trusts and Probate Specialists (ACTAPS) and has led the Contentious Trusts and Probate Department since 2021, a role in which she has thrived. Her promotion to Senior Associate at the end of 2024 was the latest step in a journey that culminates with this well-earned appointment to Partner.
"I joined Smith Partnership because I could see the opportunity to build something really meaningful here. Leading the department has been incredibly rewarding and I'm so proud of what the team has achieved. Becoming Partner feels like the start of an exciting new chapter, I can't wait to see what comes next."
Oliver Maxwell joins the partnership having been appointed to lead a brand-new discipline for the firm, real estate disputes. Oliver joined Smith Partnership in January 2025 as a Senior Associate, bringing with him a wealth of experience gained at Banner Jones, Nelsons and Eversheds Sutherland.
A specialist in real estate litigation since 2019 and a past President of the Derby and District Law Society, Oliver was also named Commercial Lawyer of the Year by the Derby and District Law Society just last week. In under 18 months, he has built a practice from the ground up, and his appointment to Partner is recognition of just how much he has already achieved.
"The opportunity to develop real estate disputes as its own dedicated discipline here was too exciting to miss. It's the kind of work I love, building something new, working with great clients, and being part of a firm that gives you the space to grow. I'm delighted to be made Partner and very much looking forward to what we can achieve together."
Three of the firm's Partners have also been advanced to Equity Partner, and in each case, the story is one of dedication, progression and, for most of them, a career built almost entirely within Smith Partnership.
Anna McLeod first walked through the door of Smith Partnership back in 2003, as a clerk in our Crime team in Derby. She completed her training contract with us, qualified in 2008, and has never looked back. Now a specialist in complex clinical negligence claims, covering everything from A&E and surgery to GP negligence, Anna became a Partner in 2020 and will take on leadership of both the Personal Injury and Medical Negligence teams from 1 April, following the retirement of the much-respected Dave Clark, and Martin Bradbury. Her advancement to Equity Partner is greatly deserved.
“Smith Partnership has been my home for over 20 years. When I first joined, I could never have imagined how my career would develop over the years that followed. To have joined as a Clerk and to now become an Equity Partner, all within the same firm, means everything to me. I'm proud of the journey and I'm really looking forward to leading the team through its next chapter.”
Danielle Upton joined Smith Partnership in 2014 as a Trainee Solicitor, qualified with us in 2016, and has been a cornerstone of the Commercial Property team ever since. She handles a full range of commercial property transactions and is well respected by both her clients and peers, as an expert in her field. She advanced quickly with us and was promoted to Partner in 2023. Her progression to Equity Partner is the latest chapter in what has been a brilliant career with the firm.
‘I am incredibly proud of my journey with Smith Partnership. The firm has supported and encouraged me at every stage, from joining as a Trainee Solicitor, to now arriving at Equity Partner. The Commercial Property team has also evolved and grown significantly in that time and I am excited for what is still to come. It is a privilege to work alongside such a talented team and I am truly invested in what we are building together, with our client’s at the heart of everything that we do’.
Anna, Danielle, Gemma and Victoria all came to Smith Partnership at the early stages of their careers and have grown with us, their stories are a reflection of what's possible here. Oliver's appointment shows just as powerfully that we attract and back exceptional people who bring something new to the firm. All five of them embody what Smith Partnership stands for, and we look forward to seeing them thrive in the years ahead.
