Head of Employment Law appointed as Leadership Transition Continues

We are pleased to announce Rebecca Reid as our new Head of Employment Law. The appointment follows the recent announcement that James Johnson has taken on the role of Managing Partner.

Rebecca will be returning to Smith Partnership, where she originally trained and qualified as a solicitor. Rebecca has developed extensive expertise through diverse roles, including working for a large firm in Birmingham, working as an in-house employment solicitor at The Priory Group and most recently, as a lecturer in employment and contract law at the University of Law.

Commenting on the news, James Johnson said: "As I step into my next role, I'm absolutely delighted that we've recruited Rebecca to lead the Employment Department."

"Rebecca trained and qualified in my team at Smith Partnership, and it’s a momentous moment for both her and us that she now returns to lead the team. She brings a wealth of expertise and experience, and I'm very confident she will be a tremendous asset to the employment team and the firm moving forward.”

“Her unique blend of private practice, in-house, and academic experience, positions her well to lead the team and to continue to deliver exceptional service to the firm's clients."

The appointment represents another milestone in Smith Partnership's continued growth and strategic development, following the recent announcement that James would be succeeding Kevin McGrath as he stepped down as Managing Partner after more than three decades of service to the firm. James himself began his career at Smith Partnership nearly 30 years ago, working closely with Kevin. His progression through the firm to ultimately becoming Managing Partner exemplifies the firm's commitment to nurturing talent and promoting from within.

Rebecca's appointment ensures continuity and fresh expertise for Smiths' Employment Law practice as the firm enters its next chapter under new leadership.

Rebecca adds: "I'm excited to be back at the firm, where in 2013 I began my career. I'm passionate about supporting employers of all shapes and sizes with pragmatic and solution-focused advice on all areas of employment law, and delivering employment law training, as well as advising senior employees on contracts, post-termination restrictions and negotiated exits.”

“I’m excited to apply the experience I’ve gained in my time away, bring a fresh perspective and contribute to the firm’s success."

Smith Partnership remains committed to Derby and the wider East Midlands, continuing to invest in local legal talent and providing expert legal services to businesses and individuals across the region.
